USAF Electronic Countermeasures

September 1961 I left for Lackland Air Force Base, Texas on this plane. My mother took this picture.

Basic Training. That's an original Coca Cola.

Electronics, Biloxi, Mississippi. Me - back row, third from the left again

I was trained on the maintainance of the ALT-7 ECM Transmitter. The transmitter (right) and its Power Supply looked like this.

X-band waves traveled through "waveguide" instead of wire.

An S-band and X-band "simitar antenna." It reminds me of the "shark fin" antennas on modern automobiles

B-47 Bombers on the flight line. I was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, a Stragic Air Command (SAC) base in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

B47's were the world's first swept wing bomber and the first with out-rigger landing gear, which was necessary because of the thin wings. I remember working on this airplane, #2135

B47s had only tail guns because at 600 mph they were the fastest plane built. They could carry one nuclear weapon or 10,000 pounds of conventional bombs.

A JATO (Jet Assisted TakeOff). When a B47 was fully loaded with fuel pods (17,000 gal.) and bombs, a JATO rack was installed behind the aft wheel well. The rack was jetisoned after take off.

The B47 had a three-man crew; Pilot, Copilot and Navigator.

The co-pilot sat behind the pilot.

The Navigator/Bombadier sat in the nose of the plane.

AEL installed ALT-6s in M113 APCs (Armored Personel Carrier)

AEL designed and manufactured an ECM system that fit in the back of a Jeep.

AEL's ECM systems were installed in DC6s.

Seifert X-ray

This is a "portable" industrial X-ray machine. Seifert X-Ray provided sales, service and testing

Another X-Ray tube. It is basically a tank of dielectric oil with an x-ray tube inside powered by a high voltage supply.
